Gardener appointed U-20 head coach

first_imgFormer Reggae Boyz captain Ricardo Gardner has replaced his 1998 World Cup teammate, Theodore Whitmore, as the national Under-20 head coach.Altimont Butler, also a former Reggae Boy, will be his assistant.Whitmore will be in charge of the national Futsal team that will be involved in a tournament in Cuba next January. Fabian Taylor will be his assistant.President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Captain Horace Burrell in announcing the change at the Sherwin Williams Women’s League awards ceremony held at the JFF’s offices last Thursday expressed dissatisfaction with the transition of local talent from the schoolboy level to national representation.”There has been a lot of talk about youth development in Jamaica. I am very happy to announce that JFF will be making some changes in this regard,” the JFF boss said.”The transition between the Manning Cup and daCosta Cup and the senior national team is not what it should be. After extensive discussions with the director of football (Vinimore Blaine), a decision was made to put the two former Reggae Boyz players in charge of the Under-20 team,” Burrell said.Butler told The Sunday Gleaner that although he has more experience as a coach than Gardner, he (Butler) is willing to play any role in a coaching position.”I am a Jamaican and will to do duties for the country in any role as a coach,” Butler said following the announcement.Butler, who has coached in Europe and the United States has a ‘B’ licence in football coaching, while Gardner is currently pursuing his licence. Chelsea ready to kick-start Sarri era after frantic deadline

first_img0Shares0000Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has work to do after a busy transfer deadline © AFP / Ian KINGTONHUDDERSFIELD, United Kingdom, Aug 10 – A frantic 48 hours in the transfer market provided Chelsea with a timely lift after last weekend’s Community Shield defeat to Manchester City. The 2-0 loss left new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri to rue the difference between the two teams, with Pep Guardiola’s champions looking sharper and fitter than the Italian’s side. Sarri has been in post for less than four weeks and the last thing he needed was to go into the first game of the new season at Huddersfield on Saturday against the backdrop of a protracted stand-off between the club and keeper Thibaut Courtois.Courtois’s decision to stay away from the club this week in a bid to force a move to Real Madrid could have had a negative impact at Stamford Bridge, reviving memories of the dispute with Diego Costa 12 months earlier. But Chelsea moved quickly to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao for £71.6 million – a world record for a keeper – on a seven-year contract, triggering Courtois’s exit to Real.As part of the deal for the Belgian, Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic moved in the opposite direction on a season-long loan. For a club desperate to progress after a fractious campaign that was marred by a rift between coach Antonio Conte and the club and ended with a disappointing fifth placed finish, it was good business all round. Now, Sarri must do all he can to prevent Eden Hazard following his international team-mate to Madrid, although the current signs are the Belgium star has been convinced to stay.Courtois, though, did little to restore his already damaged reputation at his former club when he expressed his hope Hazard would join him when he was presented at the Bernabeu Stadium.“Eden congratulated me,” he said. “He knows it is a dream for me to be here. I would like to be always by his side.“He is a great player and if he could come here, it would be fantastic.”Sarri, the former Napoli coach, can continue his efforts to introduce the 4-3-3 system he used so successfully in Serie A after two seasons of 3-4-3 under Conte.– Focus on Kepa –The Wembley clash against City confirmed there is plenty of work to do and it may be some time before Sarri finally settles on his two central defenders.David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger appear to be his first choice right now, but Luiz in particular looked shaky against City. And in midfield, Kovacic is likely to join Jorginho and N’Golo Kante to strengthen an area that was overrun by the champions. This weekend, though, the main focus will be on Arrizabalaga if, as expected, the 23-year-old takes his first steps in English football.Kepa’s compatriot David De Gea took time to settle when he first arrived at Manchester United and the former Bilbao man acknowledges he will need to adapt.“This is a great challenge for me and it means a lot for my career and also in my personal life,” he said.“It is a great step forward for my career. It is also very brave for the club to take me in.“In terms of the price, me being the most expensive goalkeeper in the world, it is something I just don’t think about.“I am just going to be myself, the same I have always been and try to give my best for the club.”The speed with which Kepa settles in will be just one of the factors that determine how Chelsea progress under Sarri’s new regime.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Storms leave state with water to spare

first_imgSAN FRANCISCO – A series of late winter storms that blanketed the Sierra Nevada with snow has left California flush with water for the foreseeable future, according to meteorologists and hydrologists. The Sierra Nevada snowpack, which serves as a natural holding tank for California, contains more water than even last year, which also saw above-average snowfall. Donner Summit, for example, has seen 390 inches of snow, compared to an average of 313 inches for this time of year, according to data compiled by Randall Osterhauber, a research scientist for the University of California at Berkeley. Donner has 120 inches of snow on the ground, compared to 71 at this time last year, according to Osterhauber’s statistics. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORE‘Mame,’ ‘Hello, Dolly!’ composer Jerry Herman dies at 88 “If it stopped right now, we would have enough water in storage for two years of drought,” said Mike Pechner, staff meteorologist for KCBS Radio. “They have already had an entire season’s worth of accumulated rain and snow.” The situation has surprised many hydrologists and meteorologists who didn’t expect such a flush year after the New Year got off to a balmy start. More rain than snow fell during the Christmas and New Year’s storms, which were followed by a warm, dry February. Almost all the major snowfall has come since March 1. “As long as I’ve been keeping records, we haven’t had a similar cold snap this late in the season,” Pechner said. “The snowpack in the Sierra more than doubled in 17 days.” Most reservoirs are so full that they are spilling over, and officials are releasing water to make room for the snowmelt. “We’ve got good reservoir storage and good snowpack,” said Frank Gehrke, chief of snow surveys for the California Department of Water Resources. “In essence, we’ve got two bank accounts, and both of them are healthy.”160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Speed-camera operators vote for strike action

first_imgSpeed camera operators have voted overwhelmingly for industrial action, including strike action, in a ballot counted yesterday (Fri). The trade union Siptu said its members employed by GoSafe overwhelmingly backed industrial action, including strike action, in a ballot conducted on Friday, according to The Irish Times. Siptu organiser Brendan Carr said: “Our members were left with no option other than to vote for industrial action due to the continued refusal of the company to implement a Labour Court recommendation which confirms that it is Siptu representatives who have the sole right to negotiate on behalf of its members with management. “Our members have serious concerns relating to working conditions at the company. The employees of GoSafe were frustrated in their attempts to negotiate with their employer as it refused to attend the conciliation services of the State.”Mr Carr criticised what he described as “ the unacceptable practice of Government departments issuing contracts for State services to companies who refuse to engage with the industrial relations bodies of the State”.“This is a completely unacceptable situation when such companies are in receipt of large amounts of public funds.”He said Siptu wrote to Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan, in relation to its members’ concerns. “Union representatives asked to meet with the Minister to discuss this dispute and seek his assistance in resolving it prior to any industrial action, which could impact on the operation of measures to ensure road safety. “Unfortunately, the Minister declined to intervene, despite the possible serious implications on road safety which is one of his key responsibilities.”Speed-camera operators vote for strike action was last modified: September 7th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more
