Timberland owner stops buying leather from Brazil

NEW YORK — The owner of Timberland, Vans and several other shoe and clothing brands says it has stopped buying leather from Brazil as fires continue to destroy the Amazon rainforest in that country.VF Corp. says it won’t purchase leather and hide from Brazilian suppliers until it’s assured that the materials “do not contribute to environmental harm in the country.”The current fires in the Amazon were set by those who are clearing the forest for cattle ranching and crops. About 60% of the Amazon rainforest is in Brazil.VF, based in Greensboro, North Carolina, says a small amount of the leather it buys comes from Brazil, but didn’t provide specific numbers.Besides Timberland boots and Vans sneakers, VF also makes The North Face jackets, Eastpak backpacks and Dickies clothing.Joseph Pisani, The Associated Press

MasterCard Inc. reports quarterly financial results before the market opens on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. (AP Photo/Toby Talbot) MasterCard’s 4th quarter profit climbs 3 per cent, but adjusted results miss expectations PURCHASE, N.Y. – MasterCard Inc.’s fourth-quarter earnings climbed 3 per cent as rising payment volume countered a jump in expenses, but the results fell short of financial analysts’ expectations. That sent shares in the Purchase, N.Y., payment networks company down 5 per cent in morning trading Friday.MasterCard said net income grew to $623 million, or 52 cents per share, in the three months that ended Dec. 31. That compares with $605 million, or 49 cents per share, a year earlier.Earnings in the most recent quarter totalled 57 cents per share, not counting a litigation-related charge.Revenue climbed 12 per cent to $2.13 billion, as consumers hit stores for holiday shopping.Analysts anticipated adjusted earnings of 60 cents per share on $2.14 billion in revenue.MasterCard said its revenue climbed partly because of a 13 per cent increase in processed transactions to 10.4 billion and a 14 per cent increase in gross dollar volume. But that was partly offset by an increase in rebates and incentives that the company offered in conjunction with renewed deals signed during the quarter.Operating expenses, which included a $95 million provision for a litigation settlement, rose 21 per cent to $1.21 billion.Analysts were not anticipating the increase in operating expenses and rebates and incentives, which led to the disparity in the consensus earnings forecast and MasterCard’s results.Still, the growth in rebates and incentives is likely a positive for MasterCard’s longer-term growth prospects, Barclays analyst Darrin Peller wrote in a research note.MasterCard does business all over the world, and its results are a window into how people are spending at all different income levels.U.S. consumer spending grew during the October-December quarter at the fastest pace in three years. The Commerce Department Friday that consumer spending rose a solid 0.4 per cent in December after rising 0.6 per cent in November, the best gain in five months.MasterCard rival Visa Inc., along with card issuers American Express Co. and Discover Financial Services, reported higher card spending during the holiday season.Shares in MasterCard slid $3.97, or 5 per cent, to $75.79 in morning trading. The stock is down more than 9 per cent so far this year. by The Associated Press Posted Jan 31, 2014 6:38 am MDT read more

Baseball Former bigleaguer Matt Angle returns to roots to help coach Ohio

Former Ohio State and Baltimore Orioles’ outfielder Matt Angle (38) is congratulated in the dugout after hitting a lead off home run against Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander during the first-inning at Comerica Park in Detroit, on Sept. 24, 2011. Credit: Courtesy of TNSEvery kid playing catch in the backyard with his or her father dreams about the chance to make it to the big leagues. For most, those hopeful thoughts are virtually unattainable. But there are some who make it.Former Ohio State outfielder Matt Angle was able to achieve that goal. He spent three years playing at the school of his dreams, was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and debuted with the team in 2011, becoming the first OSU outfielder since Nick Swisher to reach the majors. But for Angle, the dream he was living started well before he was drafted.Growing up in a suburban community in Whitehall, Ohio — a small city east of Columbus — Angle had grown up a fan of the Buckeyes. Both his grandfather and his aunt had graduated from OSU, and Angle said he was excited to play at the school he grew up loving.“It was awesome,” Angle said. “I grew up a Buckeye fan. Being able to have your family and friends come watch and still be close to home, it was a great experience.”Angle found a great deal of success at OSU, almost immediately. As a freshman in 2005, he started in 40 games in right field and quickly established himself as a bonafide leadoff hitter for the Buckeyes. On Apr. 27, 2005, in the second game of a doubleheader against Eastern Michigan, Angle was batting leadoff and starting in right field. For the remaining 27 games of the season, and essentially for the rest of his Buckeye career, Angle was found atop the lineup. But despite all the success, it was not until he participated in the Cape Cod League in 2006 that he started to believe a professional career in baseball was ahead of him.“(I) went out there, performed well, and that’s when you’re matched up against some of the best players in the country,” Angle said. Then, on June 7, 2007, the phone call finally came through, alerting Angle that he had been selected with the fifth pick in the seventh round of the draft, 219th overall by the Baltimore Orioles. Angle remembers exactly where he was when he got the life-changing call.“I was actually at my house on campus,” he said. “Just with some roommates and some buddies, and then got together with my family after.”Angle describes the moment as a great and memorable experience.“It’s something that you work hard for, something that you always dream about — the opportunity to play professionally, and it was something I’ll never forget,” he said. After being drafted, it took Angle some time to reach the majors. He debuted in 2007 at Low Class-A and the next three-and-a-half seasons traveled through various levels of the minors before finally landing in Baltimore. For many minor-leaguers, the travel can be an unwanted burden that puts stress on the family life, but Angle and his wife saw it as a great opportunity to see many different parts of the United States.“(My wife) was able to see a lot of cities and a lot of places that she wouldn’t have been able to see,” he said. “Looking back now, I think you appreciate it more — some of the trips, some of the cities, some of the opportunities. Time to spend together that you do while you were playing.”Despite the travel and most of the minor league teams being located closer to the East Coast, Angle kept to his roots and lived in Columbus throughout his playing career.“Columbus was always home,” he said. “Offseasons were always spent in Columbus, and then I would just live in whatever home city I was playing in that year. But Columbus has always been home.”On July 17, 2011, the day finally came when Angle donned an Orioles uniform and took the field at Camden Yards. He was slotted to lead off, a role in which he had grown comfortable. He went 0 for 3, but it was a day he will never forget.Orioles left fielder Matt Angle (38) bumps fists with first base coach Wayne Kirby (23) in the 7th inning after he is walked to first base by Indians’ pitcher Chad Durbin. Credit: Courtesy of TNS“It’s something you’re always working for,” Angle said. “My wife and my mom and uncle and cousin were able to make the trip over to Baltimore. It was a day game, I can’t remember if it was noon or 1, so it was early. Got in late the night before after getting called up so it was a quick turnaround.”And of all the teams he could have debuted against, of course it was the Ohio-based Cleveland Indians. Though Angle grew up as a Cincinnati Reds fan, it was something special for him to play against a local team.“(I was) not as much an Indians fan, but it was great growing up in Ohio to be able to make your debut against another Ohio team,” Angle said.Unfortunately for Angle, his career in the majors was short-lived. He finished the 2011 season in Baltimore and never saw another major-league at-bat. His final career stat line was .177/.293/.266, with a lone home run and 11 stolen bases. He spent four more seasons in the minors, split between the farm systems of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins and Oakland Athletics. But as the years wore on and it became clearer that he did not have the same skillset he had a few years earlier, Angle decided to hang up his cleats.“At that point, sometimes the game just kind of tells you,” he said. “Ideally, you would’ve loved to still been able to play longer, but sometimes the game just tells you it’s time.”Though his career as a player was over, Angle found a new career with the sport he loved. He knew he still had some unfinished business and a possible future back in Columbus.Angle left OSU a year early, without receiving his degree, so that was one of the first things he wanted to take care of when he moved back to Columbus.“It was something that was always important to me,” he said. “I actually finished my degree my last year of playing. And it was something I’ve always wanted to do. Having a degree from Ohio State means so many different things, whether it’s in the sport world or the business world.”While completing his degree in sport industry at OSU, Angle found that a job was awaiting him on the baseball team. He joined coach Greg Beals’ staff as co-video coordinator. In this position, he sits down with players to review film and helps them go through what might be wrong with their swing and how they can heat up at the plate. “My first year as the — I was more student, I was still graduating at the time — there was a lot more I was able to do on-field,” Angle said. “So you’re able to implement some things there, and now you’re just following through on the video side, suggesting, being able to give a fresh set of eyes watching the game a little bit differently.”Ohio State co-video coordinator Matt Angle in the dugout during the Buckeyes’ 2016 Big Ten tournament championship run. Credit: Courtesy of OSU AthleticsFor some of these younger players, a fresh set of eyes can be exactly what they need to help break out of a funk at the plate. Sophomore third baseman Brady Cherry said that the team benefits from having a former player with the experience at the plate.“He knows his stuff, and I think everybody here trusts him with all the knowledge that he has,” Cherry said. The experience Angle brings to the team isn’t only as a bastion of light for players going through a tough time at the plate, but it can also be a great aid to the coaching staff if it can’t seem to get through to the player.“Matt’s a great resource for me too — just in different approaches, how to approach hitters, and how we can go about attacking a week and attacking a practice plan, and helping get our guys as ready to play as possible,” Beals said. For Angle, his time spent helping coach younger players at OSU has been well spent, and he seems to like the work here. Asked what he will be doing after coaching at OSU, Angle said he doesn’t know.“That’s the great question. You know, we’ll see,” Angle said. “I’ve enjoyed the last two-and-a-half, three years that I’ve been a part of the program. Right now, being fully entrenched in the season, not really thinking too far outside of that. If you have any great ideas, I’d be open.” read more

Why sprinting on the inside track could cost athletes a medal

first_imgAlthough it seems like a small amount, the difference between the top runners is now so small, that it would be enough to keep sprinters off the podium, and call into question some historic results. Athletes running in inner and middle lanes in 200m and 400m sprints could be losing races because the bends have a major impact on their performance, scientists have discovered. For the first time, researchers have calculated the impact of being positioned in different lanes and found that being on the outside, near to the spectators could shave 0.18 seconds off a 200m race time.center_img Traditionally, lanes for a final are allocated based on performance in previous heats, with the top runners generally finding…last_img

Bench on which Skripals were found collapsed set to be replaced by

The sites that remains closed off to the public and under the control of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs are Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey’s house, Salisbury Ambulance Station, Amesbury Ambulance Station, Bourne Hill Police Station and Council Office, Ashely Wood vehicle recovery, The Mill Pub and Zizzi’s Italian restaurant.  The bench on which Sergei and Yulia Skripal were found poisoned is set to be replaced by an art installation, council officials have said. Salisbury’s main shopping area The Maltings in the city centre – where Russian former spy and his daughter were found unconscious – was released from Government control on Monday following decontamination work. While there is no plans to replace the bench, which was removed as part of the investigations, the council is looking to install artwork in its place. The Maltings – one of the key sites at the centre of the Skripal poisoning case – poses “no risk to public health” and is set to reopen this weekend – 82 days after the nerve agent attack. Around eight retail units and an area of the park that surrounds the shopping centre in the Wiltshire town have been out of bounds for the public since March 4. While other major sites – such as Sergei Skripal’s house and the car pound from which his BMW was recovered – remain behind a cordon, The Maltings re-opening signals the first major shift towards Salisbury returning to normal.  When the cordon is lifted, expected to be Friday, it will mark the first major re-opening of a site directly linked to the novichok nerve agent attack. Chairman Alistair Cunningham confirmed the plans for the bench on Tuesday, and said: “There’s no risk to public health, it’s a simple message. There’s no doubt the site is clean.”The site is in quite a state after not being touched for a few months. Our plan is to do as much as we can in the next few days … because it’s a vital economic link for the town centre.”He added around £250,000 had been given to affected local businesses, which saw revenues drop by up to 80% in the immediate aftermath of the poisoning.Mr Skripal, 66, and Ms Skripal, 33, were admitted to Salisbury District Hospital after coming into contact with the military-grade nerve agent novichok.Mr Skripal left the hospital on Friday morning following his daughter’s discharge on April 10.Mr Cunningham added: “Things are running to plan and this is a real milestone in Salisbury returning to normal.”You walk around and life goes on, the city is bigger than the incident.” A team from the town’s recovery co-ordinating group will now tidy up the spot, which was shut off at the beginning of March as part of the police investigation and later for decontamination. One location – Mr Skripal’s house – is still under police watch as the investigation into who poisoned the former Russian double agent continues.  Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Uruguay returns independence hero to mausoleum

He’s a Latin American leader and (we), and the metallurgical workers, share his belief of a unified Latin America.Artigas was born to a wealthy family and rose to become a leader of Uruguay’s 19th century fight for independence from Spain and Portugal. History books describe Artigas as a man happy to do farm labor with the Gauchos, or the cowboys of the Uruguayan and Argentine Pampas flatlands.Although Artigas fought to free Montevideo and Buenos Aires from the European empires, his attempt to unite the region’s provinces failed and he was forced to spend his last days in Paraguay, where he died. When the procession of more than 1,000 people reached the square, the urn was returned to a marble and cement mausoleum inaugurated in 1977 during the country’s military dictatorship. The mausoleum stirred controversy in 2009, when former President Tabare Vazquez announced he would move Artigas’ remains from the “cold marble” to a building in the plaza where they could be put on public display.Congress voted in favor of the plan, but the project stalled after more than a hundred people rode horses to Independence Square to protest. Vazquez then said Artigas’ remains would be taken away for restoration. 142 of them developed Alzheimer’s The researchers then used the records of those 142 people to figure out their BMI and discovered that every increasing step up on BMI charts meant Alzheimer’s struck 6 1/2 months sooner Researchers aren’t sure if the reversehaving a healthy BMI and being slimare indicators of not developing Alzheimer’s later on They’re also not sure if losing weight after age 50 lessens the impact or delays Alzheimer’s Regardless it’s a result that has many worried particularly given the increasingly large population of obese middle-aged adults across the world About 46 million people currently suffer from Alzheimer’s disease with the number projected to double in the next 20 years Write to Tanya Basu at tanyabasu@timecom 2015 –@VanityFair & @nancyjosales we have lots of data.000 fine.
