Gorakhpur/Lucknow: Barely three days after joining the SP-BSP-RLD ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in Uttar Pradesh, the Nishad Party Friday sprang a surprise by parting ways with the fledgling anti-BJP alliance and meeting Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. There was no immediate word from either side as to what transpired at the meeting between the Nishad Party leaders including its President Sanjay Nishad with Adityanath in Lucknow. “The Nishad Party is no more in alliance with the Samajwadi Party,” Nikky Nishad alias Riteash Nishad, media in-charge, Nishad Party, told PTI in Gorakhpur. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c details “There was conflict between the two parties on Maharajganj seat as Nishad Party wanted to contest with its own party symbol where as Samajwadi Party was not ready for it,” he added. The party workers were not willing to contest on the SP symbol and many of them began quitting, he said. “So, our national president Sanjay Nishad ji went to Lucknow and on late Thursday it was confirmed that the Nishad Party is no more a part of the alliance,” he added. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from Thursday When asked whether Pravin Nishad, MP, will also quit Samajwadi Party, he said, “I don’t know about it.” The Nishad Party is headed by Sanjay Nishad, the father of Pravin Nishad who had won the Gorakhpur parliamentary seat on an SP ticket in the 2018 by-polls. The win had been remarkable, as Gorakhpur was considered a bastion of Adityanath, who had represented the parliamentary constituency several times before. A Nishad Party insider accused SP chief Akhilesh Yadav of backtracking on his promises. “They did not put our name on the posters/letters or anything. Our party workers, authorities, core committee were upset,” he said. “So, the Nishad Party has taken a decision today that we are not with the ‘gathbandhan’, we are free, can fight elections independently and can look for other options as well. The party is free now,” he added. When contacted, SP national spokesman Rajendra Chowdhury told PTI that he had no information of the decision taken by the Nishad Party. Just three days ago on Tuesday, the Nishad (Nirbal Indian Shoshit Hamara Aam Dal) Party in a press conference in Lucknow had announced that it was joining the grand opposition alliance in the state. On the day of the announcement, Sanjay Nishad had addressed a press conference in which he had attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling him a ‘jumlebaz’ as well as Adityanath. “Our constitution, youth and farmers’ futures are in grave danger. People voted for a ‘jumlebaz’ party cause of their false promises,” he had said. “Modi and Yogi promised many things for Nishad community but nothing was done. The Nishad community will now give full support to the SP-BSP alliance in all the state,” he added. The Nishad Party, sources said, is in talks with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for some seats including Gorakhpur.
With President Mbeki continuing his efforts on behalf of the African Union (AU) and in cooperation with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI), Mr. Annan said, “The parties must now agree upon a detailed programme of action for the implementation of their commitments within a clear timeframe.”In a statement issued by his spokesman, he added that they should ensure that “genuine progress, which is required to prepare for the holding of elections in October 2005, is made.”To stop fierce fighting over election results and a failed coup attempt, the groups previously agreed to the Linas-Marcoussis accord in 2003 and the Accra III pact this year.Meanwhile, the group calling itself the Young Patriots, who planned to demonstrate on Saturday to demand the withdrawal of French Licorne peacekeeping troops from the country, told UNOCI that their demonstration would be peaceful. The UN mission’s radio station, UNOCI FM, went on the air in the northern town of Bouaké yesterday. Programming emphasized peace messages, news and features on human rights, disarmament and the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
Alberta government to unveil budget, 10-year financial plan on March 26 EDMONTON – The Alberta government says it will bring down its game-changing budget and 10-year financial plan on March 26.Premier Jim Prentice has promised the budget will fundamentally restructure how the province spends and saves money to insulate it from future swings in oil prices.Prentice has said plunging oil prices have left a projected $7-billion hole in next year’s budget. He and Finance Minister Robin Campbell have said they are looking at hikes to income taxes and user fees to cover it off. However they have ruled out increases to corporate taxes or oil royalties, saying that would be self-defeating in a struggling economy.Prentice has been under fire this week for telling Albertans that if they want to know who is responsible for the financial mess, they should “look in the mirror.” AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email by The Canadian Press Posted Mar 5, 2015 12:36 pm MDT
Valeant tries to reassure investors after ex-CEO sells nearly US$100M in stock by Ross Marowits, The Canadian Press Posted Jul 14, 2016 9:37 am MDT Last Updated Jul 14, 2016 at 4:45 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email MONTREAL – Valeant Pharmaceuticals tried to reassure investors Thursday after its former CEO sold nearly US$100 million of equity in the troubled drug company. The Quebec-based drugmaker said Michael Pearson remains a large shareholder with 3.5 million shares after he dumped US$96.8 million worth of stock. The company said Pearson exercised and sold options representing about 4.4 million shares and sold about 411,000 shares of common stock in June and July to satisfy tax obligations. Those obligations came after Goldman Sachs forced Pearson last year to sell 1.3 million shares he pledged to secure loans from the banking and investment management firm.“Mike’s personal stock transactions are not a reflection of the ongoing viability of Valeant,” chairman and CEO Joseph Papa said in a news release Thursday. In the same statement, Pearson said he continues to have faith in the company and its management team.“While I trimmed my ownership position for personal reasons, I plan on holding my remaining shares until the company recovers and returns to being traded on fundamentals,” he said.He is required to hold one million shares for two years following his termination in May.Pearson’s stock sale comes after Sequoia Fund, Valeant’s (TSX:VRX) second-largest shareholder, got rid of its stake in the company. The U.S. investor said Tuesday it sold its entire position in Valeant by mid-June after an 80 per cent decline in Valeant’s share price “badly penalized” its results.Vicki Bryan, an analyst with corporate bond research company Gimme Credit, said the stock sales by Pearson and Sequoia signal “zero confidence” in Valeant’s prospects.Valeant’s shares partially recovered Thursday from a more than seven per cent drop in its share price Wednesday. Its stock gained 5.6 per cent to close at $29.69 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
Then-freshman OSU quarterback Braxton Miller (5) is tackled during a game against Illinois Oct. 15, 2011. OSU won, 17-7.Credit: Lantern file photoJunior quarterback Braxton Miller was thrown to the wolves in his freshman season with the Ohio State football team.Miller was the starter at quarterback in each of the final 10 games of 2011, including the Buckeyes last game at Illinois’ Memorial Stadium, Oct. 15, 2011.In that game OSU pulled off a 17-7 victory, although Miller only completed a single pass.“I was thrown in there early. I don’t think I was ready at that time, but I did what I had to do,” Miller said after practice Wednesday. “It was kind of a big stage at that time, so I had to prepare and it was kind of tough and I didn’t expect to play as a freshman.”Now the No. 3 Buckeyes (9-0, 5-0), will return to Memorial Stadium Saturday, looking to extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 22 games.Coach Urban Meyer, who took over the Buckeyes following the 2011 season, said Miller has come a long way since that game.“I can assure you that (he’s) in a much different place than he was two years ago,” Meyer said Monday. It was a career-low in completions and passing yards for Miller, who has since developed into one of the top quarterbacks in the country. He was named a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien award Nov. 4.Junior wide receiver Evan Spencer said the game in 2011 was a difficult situation because of Miller’s inexperience.“His freshman year, it was kind of a unique situation for all of us really and we were trying to win games (OSU finished the year 6-7), whatever it took to win a game,” Spencer said after practice Monday. “So now that he has really developed as a passer and he’s gotten better at reading what he has to do, we flow so much better.”Redshirt-senior left tackle Jack Mewhort said in hindsight, it’s hard to believe the Buckeyes only completed one pass during that game.“Looking back, that’s crazy to me just because our passing game has evolved so much now and so many different guys can score touchdowns for us now,” Mewhort said Monday. “One pass, that’s kind of unreal to think about, and Braxton and the skill guys have come so far.”In his freshman season, Miller averaged 96.6 yards passing yards per contest. This season, Miller has almost doubled his weekly output from two seasons ago, throwing for an average of 188 yards per game.Spencer said Miller’s development as a passer has helped the offense become more balanced this season.“It definitely changes the dynamic. We’re putting up 40-some points a game, so it’s working pretty well for us and his development,” Spencer said. “It’s coming along great … He’s playing really well right now and us as receivers, we’re executing pretty well for him.”Mewhort added that even compared to last year, Miller has become a better passer, helping the Buckeye running game in the process.“Last year, there were some games where teams played us real heavy in the box because we couldn’t do as much with our passing game, but this year, it’s a lot different. There’s not eight or nine guys in the box because this offseason Braxton, the wide receivers, the running backs and the skill guys got together and decided, ‘We’re going to be really good this year,’” Mewhort said. “I think they’ve done that so far, they’ve gotten better every game and that makes it easier on the (offensive line) and the running game, knowing that there are other threats.”In 2012, the Buckeyes beat Illinois, 52-22, with Miller throwing for 226 yards and two touchdowns on 12 completions.Meyer said having a quarterback and leader like redshirt-senior Kenny Guiton to look up to has been a boost for Miller this season – something he did not have the luxury of his first year on the job.“I think the way these two quarterbacks are now preparing, with all due respect to when Braxton was a freshman, he really didn’t have anyone to look up to to say, ‘This is the way to prepare for a college football game.’ And certainly last year, we were just still trying to teach Kenny because Kenny didn’t really know, because neither one of them really played,” Meyer said. “Now they’re both operating at a very high level, they’ve practiced very hard, they prepare very hard, much different than a year ago, so I think Kenny had a lot to do with it and it’s a direct result of the way he prepares, the way he practices.”His relationship with Guiton has been really important in his time at Ohio State, Miller said.“I look up to him as a big brother, I’ve talked to him ever since I was being recruited,” Miller said.Miller hopes to improve on his last trip to Champaign, Ill., Saturday at noon when the Buckeyes are scheduled to take on the Fighting Illini (3-6, 0-5).

SWEDISH FURNITURE GIANT Ikea has withdrawn some of its meatballs from sale in at least 15 European countries, including Ireland, after horsemeat was found in the product by Czech authorities, the company said today.“We take this very seriously and have withdrawn one-kilo bags of frozen meatballs from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, France, Britain, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Cyprus, Greece and Ireland,” in addition to Sweden, said company spokeswoman Ylva Magnusson. The product had also been removed from shelves in Denmark, according to Dorte Hjorth Harder, spokeswoman for Ikea Denmark.“We have today been informed that our meatballs could contain traces of horsemeat, based on a test done in the Czech Republic,” Ikea said in a statement.“Our own tests haven’t shown any traces of horsemeat. We now obviously have to study this further,” it added. The batch of one-kilogramme frozen meatballs had been pulled from shelves due to “customer concerns”, Ikea said.Sweden’s National Food Agency said it had been informed of the tests by Dafgaard, the company that produces the meatballs sold by Ikea in most European countries.“It’s the authorities in the Czech Republic that found traces of horsemeat in one of three tests they performed,” said Karin Cerenius, head of food control for the agency in the western region of Vaestra Goetaland.“They still don’t know the amount (of horsemeat) involved,” she said.Dafgaard said in a statement it was performing its own DNA tests on the batch and that the meatballs had been “blocked” from distribution.A spokesperson for IKEA Ireland did not return a request for comment.- © AFP 2013.Read: Calls for Coveney to step away from horsemeat investigation>More: Horsemeat containing harmful drug ‘entered food chain’ in France>
For more than a year, Mozilla has been quietly plugging away at Boot to Gecko, their browser-only mobile operating system. Late last year we got a look at some interface mock-ups, and the B2G crew started off 2012 with a bang by showing off their creation on a real, live smartphone: the Samsung Galaxy S2.Even at this comparatively early stage, B2G looks smooth and polished as Senior Director for Firefox Engineering Johnathan Nightengale puts his demo unit through the paces. Things seem to have progressed nicely since an earlier demo appeared on YouTube — the lag that was evident in February is now much harder to detect. As he walks through the default apps, Nightengale mentions how simple the transformation from browser to mobile OS was for Mozilla.Only a few additions were required so that B2G could run a phone “top to bottom using only web technology.” To enable things like sending SMS messages, taking pictures, watching videos, and making phone calls, Mozilla put together a few additional APIs that allow what is essentially Firefox to display web pages that can tap directly into all the required hardware on a smartphone.According to Nightengale, one of the greatest things about Boot to Gecko is that it’s capable of running on very modest hardware. It’s really just booting a web browser on top of a very slim Android OS “wedge” — much like what Chrome OS does. He wraps up by saying that Mozilla will have more announcements to make as additional carriers and hardware partners sign on.We’re still waiting for confirmation, but it’s rumored that LG is already on board with Boot To Gecko, and both Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom are too.More at Dzone

Democrat Ron Barca has raised $6,448.While Clark County Administrator Bill Barron oversees day-to-day county government operations, the three commissioners set policy. They currently earn $102,228 a year.District 1 covers north county and reaches as far south as parts of Orchards and Hazel Dell.Candidates run districtwide in the Aug. 7 primary. The top two finishers will advance to the Nov. 6 general election, where they will run countywide. The key issue for all the candidates? Jobs.Tanner, a Democrat who, like Mielke, has served in the state Legislature, was the first president of the Columbia River Economic Development Council. The council formed in 1982 in response to the county’s double-digit unemployment, and Tanner was among a group of people who recruited Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas, Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corp. and other high-tech firms.Tanner was also part of a group that lobbied for Washington State University Vancouver.“I think we fundamentally changed Clark County forever,” Tanner said.Tanner was senior vice president and chief operating officer of Texas-based Zeno Corp., which was sold this year, and he decided to run against Mielke because of the county’s weak recovery following the collapse of a construction-based economy. The most recent figures put the county’s unemployment rate at approximately 11 percent, 3 percent higher than the state and national average.“We need to diversify the economy,” Tanner said. As one attraction for employers, he would advocate for a research park connected to WSU-Vancouver.Tanner supports the county’s temporary fee holidays for new businesses but said temporarily waiving fees doesn’t go far enough.“The county is correct in what it’s doing, but it’s playing around the edges,” Tanner said.Mielke cites his former ownership of a trucking company and years in the Legislature among reasons voters should keep him in office.“I think it’s really important, especially in hard economic times, that we have someone with experience,” he said. Of owning a company, “It’s really a huge responsibility to sign the front of the paycheck instead of just the back of it.”He said the addition of the Clark County Department of Environmental Services, which created savings because work had been spread among departments, has been one of his proudest accomplishments. Among disappointments, he said: the inability to ease up on red tape because of state and federal regulations that commissioners are tasked with implementing.

Losing Girdwood’s Troopers means the town is looking for other means of law enforcement. Alaska Public Media file photo. At the end of the year, Alaska State Troopers says it will close their post in Girdwood. The town’s quest to court a new source of law enforcement is off to a rocky start.Download AudioThe town of Girdwood is involved in what some might see as a really unfortunate game of hot potato — Girdwood is the potato, and the two parties hoping not to get stuck with it are the Anchorage Police Department and the Alaska State Troopers.Due to statewide budget cuts, Troopers notified the town of 2,600 year-round residents that they’d no longer be able to provide law enforcement starting next year.“You know, we’re losing five trooper positions on the Kenai Peninsula. It’s essentially resource-related,” Trooper director Col. James Cockrell says. Troopers statewide are feeling the squeeze of fiscal belt-tightening at the state level. But furthermore, “(Girdwood is) in the municipality of Anchorage. You know, I certainly feel the muni of Anc. has an obligation to provide them police services there.”Losing a Trooper post is really bad news for Girdwood because, well, Trooper patrols were free. Like Colonel Cockrell says, though, Girdwood technically falls within the municipality of Anchorage. But the town has to pay for Anchorage Police Department patrols.Sam Daniel is on the Girdwood Board of Supervisors — which is sort of like a town council — they’ve taken on this issue. But they’re finding that APD doesn’t police the same way the Troopers do.“If we were to keep the state Troopers model in Girdwood — the state troopers model allows for one officer and one car to be on duty. APD, as I understand it, both the municipality and the union require that each officer have their own car, and that there be a minimum of two officers on shift.”If you look at Trooper incident logs for Girdwood the past few years, you mostly see a lot of speeding tickets, a couple of reckless driving citations, a handful of DUIs — crime stats portray it as a pretty safe place, which is why the Girdwood board is asking for just one Anchorage police officer on the weekends — Friday through Sunday. So far the answer is no. Paying for police service is not an ‘a la carte’ type of purchase. At a work session yesterday in Anchorage City Hall, Girdwood community leaders discuss possible ways to cope Trooper withdrawl with the Berkowitz administration. Photo: Monica Gokey/KSKA.Here’s how city manager Mike Abbott put to to the Girdwood board at a working session on Monday:“The police department doesn’t feel like they can provide that sort of level of service that you described, both from a staffing point of view as well as from how they’re organized and how they’re trained… and the way they operate, that doesn’t fit with how they provide police force in Anchorage. At this point, their recommendation is they not be tasked with that assignment,” Abbot says. “But they’re not the final decision makers on that.”If Girdwood was to buy into full APD coverage, it would mean an added tax through a voter-approved mill rate. The price tag is considerable.“It’s maybe a 30 percent increase to the property tax payers,” Daniel says. If you own the average single-family home in Girdwood (about $350,000), the 2.9 mill rate adds about $1,000 to your yearly tax bill. The earliest Girdwood could even vote on such a tax would be next April. If they can’t extend Trooper coverage in the meantime, it means APD will cover Girdwood, but on a very sparse, emergency-only, kind of basis.“And it would be for major crimes – such as an officer down, or a shooting, or something like that,” Daniel says. For now, Girdwood is exploring a number of different options. There’s talk of a neighborhood watch. They’ve even cast a line to Whittier about contract policing. A lot of their leads are dead ends, but the town is still trying. In Anchorage, the city is lending resources in pitching Girdwood’s case to the governor to keep Troopers on the job.

Bengaluru-based I Monetary Advisory Pvt Ltd, popularly referred to as IMA, made quite a name for itself by offering attractive investment solutions. The investment firm, operating mainly in Bengaluru, is facing the heat from the Karnataka government, which has issued a public notice to forfeit all movable and immovable properties. The Karnataka government’s notice, published in Times of India (Bengaluru edition), states IMA is found guilty of illegally collecting money from public and diverting funds to its directors and defaulting on repayments. Israel said on Sunday it planned to close the offices of Al-Jazeera in the Jewish state, after prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the Arab satellite news broadcaster of incitement.Netanyahu had said on 27 July that he wanted Al-Jazeera expelled amid tensions over a sensitive Jerusalem holy site.“Al-Jazeera has become the main tool of Daesh (the Islamic State group), Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran,” Communications minister Ayoob Kara, a member of the Druze community from Netanyahu’s Likud party, told a news conference. He accused the Qatar-based broadcaster of “inciting violence which has provoked losses among the best of our sons”, referring to two Druze policemen who were killed in a 14 July attack near the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in east Jerusalem.Netanyahu tweeted his congratulations to Kara “who on my instructions took concrete steps to end Al-Jazeera’s incitement” in Israel. An official at Al-Jazeera in Doha said the channel “deplores this action from a state that is called the only democratic state in the Middle East and considers what it has done is dangerous”.The official, who declined to be named, said the broadcaster “will follow up the subject through appropriate legal and judicial procedures”.Israel’s communications ministry said “nearly all countries in the region including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan, have concluded that Al-Jazeera incites terrorism and religious extremism.”It said it had become “ridiculous that the channel continued to broadcast from Israel”.Credentials to be revoked -Regional kingpin Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt broke ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing it of fostering extremism and later issuing 13 demands, including Al-Jazeera’s closure. The Al-Jazeera official said Sunday he was “surprised” at Israel’s justification, and defended the channel’s coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, calling it “professional and objective”.The Israeli ministry said it would also demand the revocation of the credentials of journalists working for the channel and cut its cable and satellite connections. The closure of Al-Jazeera’s offices would come under the remit of security officials.Israeli authorities would also seek to limit access by the Jewish state’s Arab citizens to the station’s broadcasts in Arabic, the communications ministry statement said without elaborating.Arab Israelis, the descendants of Palestinians who stayed after the state of Israel was created in 1948, make up 17.5 percent of the country’s population.“The Al-Jazeera channel continues to incite violence around the Temple Mount,” Netanyahu wrote in a Facebook post, referring to the Haram al-Sharif compound in Jerusalem, known to Jews as the Temple Mount.Protests erupted at the contentious site after Israel last month installed new security measures including metal detectors, following the shooting dead of the two Israeli policemen by attackers who emerged from the compound.“I have appealed to law enforcement agencies several times to close the Al-Jazeera office in Jerusalem,” Netanyahu said on July 27 in calling for the channel’s expulsion.“If this is not possible because of legal interpretation, I am going to seek to have the necessary legislation adopted to expel Al-Jazeera from Israel.”Accused of bias -Israel has regularly accused the broadcaster of bias in its coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Netanyahu heads what is seen as the most right-wing government in Israeli history. He has frequently criticised the news media, accusing outlets of seeking to undermine his government. The latest trouble at the holy site in east Jerusalem, which Israel captured during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed, followed the July 14 attack.Palestinians refused to enter the site for nearly two weeks over the new security measures imposed after three Israeli Arabs shot dead the policemen nearby. That triggered protests which left six Palestinians dead. A Palestinian also broke into a home in a Jewish settlement in the West Bank and stabbed four Israelis, killing three of them. The crisis ended when the Israeli authorities removed the newly installed security measures, including the metal detectors.Palestinians, who had viewed the new security measures as an attempt by Israel to assert further control over the compound which houses the revered Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock, then ended their boycott of the site. The Al-Aqsa compound has frequently been a flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Under a decades-old agreement, only Muslims are allowed to pray inside the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, although anyone can visit, including Jews.
