Southampton could land Virgil van Dijk following Celtic’s Champions League exit, claims Saints legend Le Tissier

first_imgSouthampton legend Matt Le Tissier believes Celtic’s Champions League exit has boosted the Saints’ late pursuit of defender Virgil van Dijk.Having missed out on signing Toby Alderweireld in a permanent deal this summer, manager Ronald Koeman is on the hunt for a new partner for Jose Fonte at the back. The south coast club reportedly offered £9million for the 24-year-old Netherlands international earlier in the transfer window, but Celtic delayed the decision over Van Dijk’s future until their place in Europe this season was decided. And, with the Scottish giants failing to qualify for the Champions League group stages with a play-off defeat to Swedish side Malmo, Koeman is in a good place to land his top target, according to the St Mary’s hero.Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Le Tissier said: “I don’t think it’s any secret that Southampton have been interested in him [Van Dijk] for a while.“With Celtic [who will now play in the Europa League this term] going out of the Champions League, it makes it a touch more likely that we might be able to get him.“We’re probably a centre-back short in our squad at the moment and I think he’d be a great addition.”last_img read more

Science legend James Watson `mortified’ by own remarks on blacks

first_imgNEW YORK – James Watson, the 79-year-old scientific icon made famous by his work in DNA, has set off an international furor with comments to a London newspaper about intelligence levels among blacks. Watson, who’s chancellor of the renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, has a history of provocative statements about social implications of science. But several friends said Thursday he’s no racist. And Watson, who won a Nobel Prize in 1962 for co-discovering the structure of DNA, apologized and says he’s “mortified.” A profile of Watson in the Sunday Times Magazine of London quoted him as saying that he’s “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours – whereas all the testing says not really.” The Sunday Times said that the interview with Watson was recorded and that the newspaper stood by the story.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. He also said people should not be discriminated against on the basis of color, because “there are many people of color who are very talented.” The comments, reprinted Wednesday in a front-page article in another British newspaper, The Independent, provoked a sharp reaction. London’s Science Museum canceled a sold-out lecture he was to give there today. The mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said his comments “represent racist propaganda masquerading as scientific fact.” In the United States, the Federation of American Scientists said it was outraged that Watson “chose to use his unique stature to promote personal prejudices that are racist, vicious and unsupported by science.” Watson’s publicist, Kate Farquhar-Thomson, would not address whether Watson was suggesting he was misquoted. “You have the statement. That’s it, I’m afraid.” last_img read more

Parents cite faith to avoid vaccinations

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREGame Center: Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday, 10 a.m.She is among a small but growing number of parents around the country who are claiming religious exemptions to avoid vaccinating their children when the real reason may be skepticism of the shots or concern they can cause other illnesses. Some of these parents say they are being forced to lie because of the way the vaccination laws are written in their states. “It’s misleading,” Rahim admitted, but she said she fears that earlier vaccinations may be to blame for her son’s autism. “I find it very troubling, but for my son’s safety, I feel this is the only option we have.” An Associated Press examination of states’ vaccination records and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that many states are seeing increases in the rate of religious exemptions claimed for kindergartners. “Do I think that religious exemptions have become the default? Absolutely,” said Dr. Paul Offit, head of infectious diseases at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia and one of the harshest critics of the anti-vaccine movement. He said the resistance to vaccines is “an irrational, fear-based decision.” The number of exemptions is extremely small in percentage terms and represents just a few thousand of the 3.7 million children entering kindergarten in 2005, the most recent figure available. But public health officials say it takes only a few people to cause an outbreak that can put large numbers of lives at risk. “When you choose not to get a vaccine, you’re not just making a choice for yourself, you’re making a choice for the person sitting next to you,” said Dr. Lance Rodewald, director of the CDC’s Immunization Services Division. All states have some requirement that youngsters be immunized against such childhood diseases as measles, chickenpox, diphtheria and whooping cough. Twenty-eight states, including Florida, Massachusetts and New York, allow parents to opt out for medical or religious reasons only. Twenty other states, among them California, Pennsylvania, Texas and Ohio, also allow parents to cite personal or philosophical reasons. Mississippi and West Virginia allow exemptions for medical reasons only. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! By Steve LeBlanc THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BOSTON – Sabrina Rahim doesn’t practice any particular faith, but she had no problem signing a letter declaring that because of her deeply held religious beliefs, her 4-year-old son should be exempt from the vaccinations required to enter preschool. last_img read more

Illuminating exhibition of artwork

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREGame Center: Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday, 10 a.m.Today the library is hosting a reception for its SunWorks Art Exhibit, which displays paintings that all have one thing in common – they feature that giant ball of flaming gas the world revolves around. Sponsored by NASA and the United Nations, the art exhibit features more than 20 creative interpretations of the sun. The works are in a variety of mediums, including paper mache, chalk and Legos, as well as the more traditional paint and photography. Three of the featured artists will be at the reception, and guests will be able to try out special telescopes and 3-D glasses that allow them to look directly at the sun without risking eye damage. “With the solar-equipped telescope, you can actually see the sun and maybe even get a glimpse of sunspots or some solar prominence, which is super-heated, plasma-type gas that looks like red hair blowing around the sun,” said Jeff Snyder, spokesman for the SunWorks project. “It’s basically looking at pure energy.” Weather permitting, visitors will also get a chance to peek at Earth’s 11,000-degree light bulb with the 3-D glasses. By Megan Bagdonas STAFF WRITER Looking out at the gloomy skies Monday, the library director sounded a bit anxious as she talked about the upcoming sun celebration at Peninsula Center Library in Rolling Hills Estates. “We’re hoping it will be sunnier than it is today. We have our fingers crossed,” said Kathy Gould, director of the three-branch Palos Verdes Library District. “When you put on these glasses and look at the sun, it looks like a big tennis ball popping out right in front of you,” Snyder said. “It’s quite impressive to see.” More than 500 artists from around the globe submitted works that demonstrate the significance of the sun in celebration of the International Heliophysical Year, a U.N.-sponsored science program to advance the understanding of solar influence on the universe. “With global warming and pollution being the big issues right now, we’ll be watching the sun pretty closely in the coming years,” Snyder said. The library director said she expects the exhibit will be popular considering the South Bay’s aerospace roots. “This community, especially, has a lot of people who work for or have been involved in various aerospace corporations,” Gould said. The SunWorks Art Exhibit will be on display at the Peninsula Center Library through October. megan.bagdonas@dailybreeze.com160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Jury selection starts in Burmeister case

first_imgPOMONA – Jury selection began Monday in the trial of two people charged in the 2001 slaying of a Cal Poly Pomona student. Opening statements will likely be held next week for Henry Singer and Markeisha Dixon. Both are charged with murder in the death of Christina Burmeister, the 20-year-old Cerritos sorority member who was kidnapped and slashed to death on her way to a fraternity party in Pomona. The pair’s trial appeared threatened last week after it was announced Singer attempted suicide in his jail cell. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREStriving toward a more perfect me: Doug McIntyre Judge George Genesta appointed a psychiatrist to examine Singer and report the findings to the man’s lawyer. On Monday, attorney Charles Uhalley told the judge Singer is mentally stable enough to face a jury. Uhalley said he reached the conclusion after he spoke to the doctor Friday. “Based on that interview and his exam of Mr. Singer, we’re ready to proceed,” the defense attorney said. Singer looked exhausted and haggard as a bailiff led him into court Monday morning. He wore yellow and blue jail clothing, and had puffy, red bags under his eyes. He said almost nothing during his brief appearance. Singer, 29, and Dixon, 26, are being tried together, but they will have separate juries. Some 200 prospective jurors have been summoned to Pomona Superior Court this week for the case. Attorneys and the judge began screening for Dixon’s jury Monday. Jury selection for Singer is set to start today. Burmeister’s body was found inside her pickup truck on a turnout along Highway 39 above Azusa. Prosecutors say Singer and Dixon helped kidnap the woman and take her into the mountains. They also say Dixon is the woman caught on a bank surveillance video using Burmeister’s ATM card to withdraw cash around the time of the kidnapping. Dixon’s husband, James Dixon, is also charged in the case. r_leveque@dailybulletin.com (909) 483-9325160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
