2 UK shares to buy and hold for the long term

first_img As the UK economy starts to recover from the pandemic, I’ve been searching for UK shares to buy that may prosper in the recovery. However, here at the Motley Fool, we’re looking for companies that we can buy and hold for years, not months. 5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…With that in mind, I’ve been searching for UK shares that look to have excellent growth potential not just for the next few months but during the next five to 10 years as well. UK shares to buy and holdI’ve been seeking out shares with robust competitive advantages. These advantages should help them fend off competition and achieve steady growth year after year. The first company I’d buy for my basket of UK shares is the London Stock Exchange (LSE: LSEG) itself. When it comes to competitive advantages, this business has a huge one. It controls London’s leading stock market and the plumbing of the stock exchange. It has taken decades for the group to build the business it has today. So it’s unlikely it’ll be unseated by an upstart competitor overnight. There are plenty of other competitors in the market, but these businesses have a mountain to climb. Customers want to deal with the most trusted and reputable party, and that’s usually the LSE. That’s not to say this is a risk-free investment. It is not. Its latest deal to acquire data provider Refinitiv lumped the group with a considerable amount of debt. Not only could this debt weigh on growth, but some analysts have also speculated that the business overpaid. If the deal turns sour, investors may see the value of their investments fall. Despite these risks, I’d buy the stock for my portfolio of UK shares today. Insurance giant Another stock I’d buy to hold for the next five to 10 years is Direct Line (LSE: DLG). Many insurance companies struggle to earn a consistent profit in the long run. It’s easy to see why. If an organisation does not have enough information to get its sums right, losses can spiral out of control. Direct Line is one of the UK largest insurers. This gives the business a competitive advantage. It has both more information on risks than peers and lower costs. At the same time, the group benefits from a captive market as car insurance is a legal requirement in the UK. While there’s always going to be the risk that the company might lose market share to peers, the firm has done an excellent job of remaining competitive over the past decade or so.Still, as noted above, the group could find itself in hot water if it gets its figures wrong. That’s always going to be a risk. Therefore, the stock might not be suitable for all. Nevertheless, considering the company’s competitive advantages, I’d buy Direct Line to hold for the long term.  Simply click below to discover how you can take advantage of this. Senate convenes in person, vice president for student affairs pays visit

first_imgThe Notre Dame student senate met in person Thursday evening. This week’s meeting was centered around an address from vice president for student affairs Erin Hoffmann Harding. Hoffmann Harding spoke about campus reopening and the restructuring of student gathering spaces on campus including social spacing of Duncan and LaFortune student centers, and the introduction of many new outdoor spaces for student gathering such as the tents in front of North and South Dining Halls and Library Lawn.Hoffmann Harding mentioned certain aspects of student life that got modified in the reopening process such as an option for students to live off-campus while still earning credit towards the University residency requirement and the opening of secondary residence locations to offer on-campus housing to all students who requested it.In addition to the modifications to campus life, Harding talked about ways to address safety concerns in a way that did not cause divisions within the University community, new Title IX regulations and racial injustice within the community. Hoffmann Harding said the University is hosting conversations with Black student organizations regarding racial injustice in four main areas: campus policing, student mental health, programming funds and space and providing training for inclusion and diversity issues for faculty.Hoffmann Harding fielded many questions regarding issues like dashboard changes, surveillance testing, concerns about Saturday’s home football game and flu season. Following Hoffmann Harding’s informative address, there was an update on the Community/Campus Advisory Coalition (CCAC) in that the CCAC has now finished the election process and the council is finalized.Next, the senate moved to the appointment of 14 members to the Committee on the Constitution. This motion was put in block by parliamentarian, junior Thomas Davis and was passed without debate. Davis said he is very excited at the appointees.“Today is a very exciting moment for me,” he said. “This is a special part of the Committee on the Constitution being able to nominate or appoint members and at large members of the student body. It was a very thorough process and I’m very happy with the appointments I’ve been able to make.”Subsequently, the senate discussed order SS 2021-16: A resolution to Commit to Anti-Racist Action at Notre Dame. This order contained a statement in which the sponsors acknowledged the presence of racial injustice and discrimination on our campus and affirmed their continued desire to engage in open and constructive conversation with leaders of the Black Student Association, Notre Dame Socially Responsible Investing and the organizers of the Notre Dame Strike for Black Lives pertaining to their organizations’ goals and steps forward to foster an anti-racist campus community.Order SS 2021-16 received some push back from Dillion Hall senator Mike Dugan who called for more aggressive resolution that actively calls for more than just conversation pertaining to racial injustice.(Editor’s Note: Mike Dugan is a former News Writer and Systems Administrator at The Observer.)“We need to do something to remove the structures that are posing barriers to students of color and prohibiting them from getting the experience that they deserve here,” Dugan said. “We’re punting, or saying, Notre Dame, talk with people, but we ourselves are not taking a stand.”Despite dissent from Dugan and others, order SS 2021-16 was passed with a vote. This week’s senate meeting concluded by a motion to move order SS 2021-07 pertaining to the availability of $10,000 from the Student Union COVID-19 Response Financial Account to next week’s meeting.Tags: Erin Hoffman-Harding, Senate, Student Lifelast_img read more

Why We’ll Have Robots In The Workplace Before Robots At Home

first_imgWhy You Love Online Quizzes lauren orsini How to Write a Welcome Email to New Employees? Tags:#Beam#PR2#robotics#robots#ROS#Suitable Technologies#Willow Garage Two technology companies have decided that the world needs a robot that can help you telecommute more than it needs a robot that can deliver beer.Suitable Technologies announced Wednesday that it will be hiring the majority of employees at another robotics company, Willow Garage. As a result, far more manpower will be put into Suitable’s robotics research, and it appears that Willow Garage is essentially ceasing further development of its main product, the PR2 robot.Suitable Technologies and Willow Garage are both started by the same founder, Scott Hassan. Suitable Technologies is best known for Beam, a remote presence robot. Beam began as Willow Garage’s Project Texai, but became such an intense project that Hassan created a separate company around it. Beam competes with several existing robot product lines that help employees “attend” company events remotely while they’re physically still at home. See also: Can’t Make The Meeting? Send Your Robot InsteadWillow Garage, on the other hand, is best known for its sophisticated personal robot, the PR2. Operating on open-source robotics technology, PR2 can flip pancakes, deliver beer to employees, and even plug itself in when it senses its battery getting low. See also: How An Open Source Operating System Jumpstarted Robotics ResearchNow that Suitable Technologies will be retaining Willow Garage employees, don’t expect to see any new developments with the PR2. Intricate but bulky, and priced at $400,000, the PR2 is sophisticated but not revolutionary. Its legacy may actually be more in software than hardware. When DARPA needed to choose a standard on which to base its global robotics contest, it picked ROS, the robotics operating system Willow Garage developed with PR2 in mind, but not the PR2 itself. For the physical robot model, it chose Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot instead. Meanwhile, Beam is priced at $16,000 (which is still pretty steep when you realize there are remote-presence robots on the market for as low as $2,000.) And the PR2 requires extensive programming for practical use. In other words, the PR2 simply isn’t as close to being ready for mainstream manufacturing as Beam is. It makes sense that Hassan is more interested in putting his focus into Beam.According to a company press release, customer support for the PR2 will still continue. However, Willow Garage will be selling its “remaining stock” of PR2 models, which makes it sound like it won’t build new models. I’ve reached out to Suitable Technologies for more information on just what innovations we can expect to see soon with Beam.Photo courtesy of Suitable Technologiescenter_img 7 Types of Video that will Make a Massive Impac… Related Posts Growing Phone Scams: 5 Tips To Avoidlast_img read more

Build Your Pipeline While You Are Standing Up a New Client

first_img Essential Reading! Get my first book: The Only Sale Guide You’ll Ever Need “The USA Today bestseller by the star sales speaker and author of The Sales Blog that reveals how all salespeople can attain huge sales success through strategies backed by extensive research and experience.” Buy Now In major account sales, you can win a new client that requires the upfront effort of standing up the account. The larger and more important the client, the more time it takes. The more complex the solution, the more your presence is necessary, even if you have excellent support. The success of standing up a new client requires more effort at the beginning when there is much work to be done, decisions to make, and when your presence can be critical to the success of the program. The early investment means you will need to spend much less time dealing with issues later, having put the processes in place and managed the transition. The challenge is building a solid pipeline during the process of standing up a new, large client. You Are Not an Account ManagerOne of the most unhealthy trends in sales today is the tendency of people who work for sales organizations to assume another person’s role, something I call taking one step to the left. The Account Executive, wanting to make a difference for the client or being asked for help, assumes the role of the Account Manager, vacating the sales role for something more operational in nature. The Account Manager steps into the role of Customer Service, taking on the work that belongs to someone else in another department. If you are standing up a client, it’s critical that you do so without taking the fateful step to the left, leaving your role open. It is challenging to maintain your role when the problems come to you, and issues tend to find their way to the most competent person willing to handle them. When it comes to managing clients, salespeople tend to have very high skill sets here, becoming a magnet for anything and everything that requires customer communication and decisions.Fair enough, you won the account, and you need to stand them up. But in doing so, you cannot become the account manager.Quarterback and Orchestra ConductorYou never see a quarterback play another position. You never see an orchestra conductor take the first chair violin. Their role is different, and it is critically important they maintain it, allowing their teammates and musicians to do what they do best. You can have a presence, attend the meetings, make decisions, and then assign the work to the people to whom it belongs. Your role in standing up your dream client is to make sure what needs to be done gets done. You own the outcome you sold your client but, you do not own all the transactions that make up that outcome.By establishing what needs to be done, who is doing it, and when you will follow up, you prevent changing your role from salesperson to operations, a transformation that is difficult to reverse—if it is possible at all, once your client accepts that you are there to take care of their every need.Making Time to SellIt feels like you are cheating on your new client. They signed the contract, and they are being launched. You are obligated to help ensure they succeed. That obligation, however, is not—and cannot be—your only obligation. You also have a responsibility to your company, and obligation equal in importance. In fact, at some point, your new dream client may be gone, and you will still be with your company (and given a long enough timeline, you will lose every client you ever win).If you don’t continue to sell, you hurt your future and your company’s. The quarter you take off to stand up your new major account will show up two or three quarters from now when you have no deals to close because you did no prospecting and created no opportunities during the time you launched your client.Show up at your new client’s place in the morning, get things sorted, make sure things are on track, and assign work to the people who own it. Then, get out of the building and sell for a couple of hours. Check in with your team and your client at lunchtime, if necessary, but don’t spend the day sitting passively in reactive mode, waiting for some problem to need your attention. If you need to show up at the end of the day, make it the last thing you do, and give yourself enough time to solve problems or find answers to challenges.Your presence is important, but you need to establish a healthy pattern of showing up and leaving. If you need to be there, be there. But if you don’t, don’t hang around. This is the only way you can continue to build a pipeline while launching a new major client.Mistakes I Have MadeI once won three major accounts in short order. I stopped prospecting completely. I lived at these three client locations, so much so, some people within the client company believed I was an employee of the company, and I looked and sounded like one. My presence on site allowed me to grow the business very quickly. Over time, all problems found there way to my desk, and in one client location, I had a desk. Not only did I not have time to sell, but I also didn’t need to sell. I had all the business I could personally handle. The Gods of Sales frown on salespeople who stop prospecting, punishing them for their insolence and for committing the cardinal sin of not prospecting. In a very short time, I lost two of the three clients, through no fault of mine or my company.Worse, I had no pipeline. As I was rebuilding my pipeline, I lost the third account. It was at that point I discovered the iron law of sales that requires you to prospect every day, in good times or bad times, when you have won a large account or lost one, and even if you are standing up the biggest account you’ve ever won.last_img read more

Ohio State Oregon agree to homeandhome series in 2020 2021

Chalk up another rematch for the Ohio State football team. Almost two weeks after finalizing an agreement to play Texas in the coming years, the Buckeyes secured another home-and-home series with Oregon for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, the athletic department announced Tuesday. “Oregon has developed into one of the premier football programs in the (Football Bowl Subdivision),” OSU athletic director Gene Smith said in a released statement. “We are excited to add them to our future slate of games.” The Buckeyes are slated to travel to Eugene, Ore., for a Sept. 12, 2020, contest before hosting Oregon on Sept. 11, 2021, in Columbus. Ducks’ athletics director Rob Mullens said OSU “provides another major conference opponent” for the future. “The Pac-12 and Big Ten have enjoyed a long-standing relationship, so the opportunity to add another Big Ten opponent was attractive, Mullens said in a released statement. “We have two of the most passionate fan bases in college football and the atmosphere at both Ohio Stadium and Autzen Stadium are among the best in college football.” Oregon football coach Chip Kelly said he shares a similar mindset. “This will be a great opportunity for our fans to be a part of an intersectional battle that has not taken place in Eugene very often,” Kelly said in a released statement. “I’ve always been a proponent of playing the highest level of competition possible. I’m a firm believer that you make yourself better when pushed by the level of your competition.” While the teams have only met eight times, it’s been less than three years since OSU defeated the Ducks in the 2010 Rose Bowl, 26-17. In fact, the Buckeyes are 8-0 against Oregon all-time. On Oct. 10, OSU and Texas agreed to play in Austin in 2022 and Columbus in 2023. The contest against the Longhorns is the first since the 2009 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, which saw Texas top OSU, 24-21. The Buckeyes announced the completion of their non-conference schedule for 2016 season Tuesday after home games against Tulsa on Sept. 10 and Central Michigan on Sept. 24 were finalized. Rounding out the Buckeyes’ non-conference schedule that year will be Bowling Green (Sept. 3) and Oklahoma (Sept. 17). read more

Simeone on Arsenal They are a very strong rival

first_imgAtletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has acknowledged that they face a very difficult encounter against Arsenal for the semi-finals of the Europa LeagueThe two sides have been heavily fancied as the favourites for the tournament and have been been drawn to face each other to determine a place in the final at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on 16 May with Arsenal set to host Atletico for the first leg at the Emirates.Unlike the Gunners, however, Simeone’s side are assured of Champions League football for next season with Atletico currently in second place in La Liga and four points ahead of Real Madrid with just six games remaining. But Simeone is refusing to get carried away and believes that going up against a coach of the calibre of Arsene Wenger with quality squad in Arsenal promises to be a difficult challenge.Jadon SanchoMerson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho might be the perfect player to play for the Gunners, according to former England international Paul Merson.“With their history they are a very strong rival, they have a very important coach who is very capable with plenty of experience and quality footballers,” said the Argentine, according to Marca.“We will use the squad as always. With it being near the end of the season, the footballers have more desire and we will go out trying to give the best for the team and thinking in winning.“This is the season where I am learning most about being a coach and improving.”Atletico delivered a 3-0 win over Levante on Sunday to maintain their four point lead over local rivals Real in second place in league standings.last_img read more

Firmino determined to end goal drought

first_imgLiverpool striker Roberto Firmino is keen to end his goal drought when they face Leicester City this weekend in the Premier League. The Brazil international will seek to end a rare goal drought when Liverpool take on Leicester although his manager Jurgen Klopp has no concerns about a drop-off in productivity. The versatile frontman has formed one of the most feared forward lines in European football over the past 12 months with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. And the 26-year-old, signed for £29 from Hoffenheim three years ago, has been impressive in Liverpool’s 100 percent start to the new Premier League campaign three victories and three clean sheetsYet despite scoring 27 times for last season, Firmino is still looking for his first goal of the new campaign even though Liverpool are the early Premier League pacesetters. The striker has not scored in eight games for Klopp’s side and in the Premier League has one goal in his past 10 appearances, a run that dates back to March.Roberto Firmino, LiverpoolVirgil van Dijk praises Roberto Firmino after Liverpool’s win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Virgil van Dijk hailed team-mate Roberto Firmino after coming off the bench to inspire Liverpool to a 3-1 comeback win against Newcastle United. But Firmino’s selfless running and ability to create spaces behind defences has been singled out as one of the reasons Salah looks capable of continuing the prodigious production of last season, when he scored 44 times for Klopp in all competitions. The Liverpool boss says there is no sense of a World Cup hangover for Firmino, whose Brazil side exited the tournament at the quarter-final stage.“He had two weeks pre-season, which is quite short for a player who needs his physical fitness as much as Roberto does but I’m completely happy,” said Klopp, according to AFP.“After two weeks’ preparation and a Brazilian holiday he is much sharper and fitter than I would have expected. It is exactly how it should be in this moment and he can improve, like we all can improve.”last_img read more
